Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple On Hillside Avenue
His silence is a yogic discipline, which quiets the mind and develops inner peace. Bābāji has lived in the United States for nearly forty years, coming several days a week to the Mount Madonna Center, founded by his students in 1978. Through his practice of selfless service or Karma Yoga, he has helped to build and maintain the Center as well as develop the Temple complex. Mount Madonna Center Mount Madonna Center, where the Temple is located, is an intentional community established in 1978, which has about 80 residents who are all volunteers. It is also home to a retreat and conference center hosting programs in yoga, spiritual development, and wellness, as well as personal retreats and daily yoga classes. It is also the site of Mount Madonna School, a fully accredited K-12 private school with some 200 children, and the Mount Madonna Institute, a post-secondary college offering degrees in Yoga, Ayurveda and Community Studies.
What a location!!! Peaceful and serene. Beautifully built and nicely maintained, up the mt.madonna. Found lot of devotees and picnickers on the spot. Prasad were brought by devotees and distributed at the temple after placing in front of deity. The main priest is found to be an american, traveled to india and learnt the pooja techniques.
They carry out aarathi at 6-30 am and 6-30 pm every day. Besides selected one tuesday of the month they carry out hanuman chalisa recitation multiple times to invoke the god. It is a very interesting location to visit.
On the road we could see wild deers moving and crossing the road, with deep forest either side. Very nice temple in a beautiful mountain. It has small Ganesh temple in the premises. What I liked most is the ambiance created and maintained with minute details.
It gives glimpses of any traditional Indian temple. Beautifully decorated temple, nice place to sit, pray & meditate.
Some nice pictures of deities & statues.some old artifacts & items related to worship. Small artificial waterfall & pond. All these things really creates an atmosphere which will help you forget the earthly world and inspire you to discover the various paths which leads to the god. Avoid Saturdays.
On sunday, it is open only in the evening after 4.00 pm. We reached early around 12.30 pm, however, they advised us to come back at 4.00. There is a Buddhist temple nearby. One can visit that & spend an hour there. Other place is the state park nearby where can spend few hours within the woods. Tips: 1) avoid saturday.
IF want to visit on saturday, reserve parking on their website. 2) On sunday, pack your food, reach in the morning/ afternoon, spend time inpark, have food in park. Then visit temple in the evening. Stay for arati at 6.00 pm & come back. 3) State park has entry fee. Pay it at the entrance (when you leave highway 152 and join the internal road ).
Then you can freely roam and use park facilities. 4) Visit to Hanuman temple & Buddhist temple is free. Only for park, you need to pay.
5) There is no restaurant nearby, so carry your food & water. 6) these days some road work is going on highway 152.
Hence, if you are coming from Gilroy, expect delays. (We spent almost more than 1 hour in traffic jam on 152.) If you see traffic jam, try another route from Watsonvillie.
